Apple's Push to Talk Framework standardizes how push-to-talk apps work on iOS. The framework was designed to improve battery life and make it clearer to users when a PTT app is running in the background.
Starting with iOS 26, Apple will require all push-to-talk apps to use their PTT Framework. For Zello, this means the framework will be automatically enabled for all iOS users starting with Zello 7.7 for iOS.
We've been working with Apple to improve the PTT Framework experience for our users. The framework makes it easier for frontline workers to stay connected without interrupting their work, enabling things like talking from your lock screen and replying while using other apps. But it also changes a few things about how Zello works that are important for your team to understand so they don't run into any issues.
The biggest benefit of the PTT Framework is that it makes communicating on Zello easier without having to open the app. The framework gives Zello users a PTT Shortcut that keeps Zello accessible from wherever you are on your phone.
From the lock screen, you can send and receive voice messages without unlocking your phone. If you're using another app, you can open a heads-up display to reply to your most recent contact or channel. And when someone sends you a message, you can see who sent it and in what channel without having to bring Zello to the foreground.
On iPhones with a Dynamic Island, Zello appears there whenever the app is running in the background. On other iPhones, a blue waveform indicator shows at the top of the screen. Tap either one to open the heads-up display and start talking. You'll also see a brief notification each time a message comes in.
Along with the benefits, there are a few behaviors to understand so your team stays connected while using Apple's PTT Framework.
Push notifications need to stay on. With the PTT Framework active, notifications are required for Zello to deliver text messages and photos while the app is in the background. Voice messages still play out loud either way. But if notifications are off, channel text messages and photos won't be delivered at all and won't appear in message history when users return to Zello. 1:1 text messages and photos will still show up as missed messages.
The "Leave" button disconnects you. The PTT Framework interface includes a "Leave" button. Tapping it disconnects you from Zello. You will stop receiving messages until you open the app again. Channel messages sent while you're disconnected won't be delivered unless your organization has Message Recovery enabled. One-to-one messages will still appear as missed messages when you return. If you just want to close the interface, swipe up to dismiss instead.
The blue indicator is always visible. When Zello is running in the background, the Dynamic Island or blue waveform indicator will be present. This simply means the system is ready to receive incoming Zello broadcasts and play them live. It does not mean Zello is recording audio, and it does not cause extra battery consumption. In fact, Zello users should notice improved battery life with the PTT Framework enabled.
How to prepare
The best way to prepare for Apple's enforcement of the PTT Framework is to let your team know it's coming. Share this blog post and our support article on the PTT Framework so your team knows what to expect, especially around push notifications and the "Leave" button.
For users on Zello 7.7 and iOS 26, there's nothing to configure. The PTT Framework is enabled automatically, and a short tutorial will walk you through the experience on first launch. Zello Work admins can also enable it across their network ahead of enforcement from the management console using the "Enable PTT framework" setting.
We also recommend enabling Message Recovery. It acts as a safety net by delivering missed channel messages when a user reconnects after tapping "Leave" or going offline.
We're here to help
The PTT Framework is a big change to how Zello works on iOS, but it's one that makes Zello more accessible for frontline teams. We'll continue working with Apple to improve the experience, and we encourage you to share your feedback directly with Apple as well through the Apple Developer Feedback Portal or AppleSeed for IT.
If you have questions about how to prepare or want help rolling it out to your organization, contact our team at paidsupport@zello.com or visit our support site.
What is the PTT Framework?
The PTT Framework is an Apple framework that standardizes how push-to-talk apps work on iPhone. It enables lock screen access, a heads-up display, and background audio for PTT apps.
When does this take effect?
The PTT Framework will be enabled automatically starting with Zello 7.7 on iOS 26. Before that, it can be enabled by an admin in the management console.
Why do I need push notifications enabled?
Push notifications are required for Zello to deliver text messages, photos, and location shares while the app is in the background. Voice messages still come through without them.
What happens if I tap "Leave"?
Tapping the "Leave" button disconnects you from Zello. You will stop receiving messages until you open the app again. Channel messages sent while you're disconnected won't be delivered unless Message Recovery is enabled. One-to-one messages will still appear as missed messages when you return. Swipe up to dismiss the interface instead if you want to stay connected.
Does it require setup?
Not for users on Zello 7.7 and iOS 26. It's enabled automatically. Admins on Zello Work can enable it ahead of time from the management console.
Can I provide feedback about the experience?
Yes. Zello has been actively sharing feedback with Apple and will continue to do so. You can also submit feedback directly through Apple's Feedback Portal or AppleSeed for IT.
