Zello has proven to be a valuable tool during hurricanes, natural disasters, and other emergencies because it provides fast and easy communication between individuals and groups. Zello can help you stay in touch with loved ones and active volunteer rescue organizations during critical events.
Please note that Zello requires Wi-Fi or cellular data to work.
Here’s how to get started using Zello during a natural disaster:
1. Download the Zello app on the Apple Store or Google Play
2. Sign up
- Using your phone number will make it easier for others to find you on Zello
3. Give Zello access to your microphone, notifications, and contact list
- Zello needs access to your microphone and notifications for proper functionality. Providing access to your contact list will let you see who is already using Zello and add them directly to your Zello contacts or channels.
4. Add contacts so people can message you
- You can add contacts by phone number, Zello username, from your phone contacts, or via QR code.
6. Learn how to share your location
When connected to a user or channel, click the three dots in the corner to share your location.

Some things to keep in mind:
If you are a first responder organization, you have access to Zello Work for free if you sign up to our first responders program. This version is normally used for internal communications within rescue organizations. Zello for first responders provides free access to everything included in our Plus package, like location services, emergency alerts, transcriptions and more.
