High school students on board stopped the bus. One of them called 911, and another used the bus radio to ask for help,[according to WTAJ](https://www.wtaj.com/news/local-news/fast-acting-students-stop-blair-county-school-bus-after-driver-suffers-medical-episode/). Moments like that are why every school bus needs a reliable way to reach dispatch. On many buses, drivers now have two devices within reach: a two-way radio for those calls and, increasingly, a tablet for turn-by-turn directions. With the right software, the tablet can handle both jobs. ## **What Does a Two-Way Radio Do on a School Bus?** Dispatchers and bus drivers need to reach each other throughout a route. On many buses, they do it over a two-way radio, which handles three jobs: - **Two-way calls with dispatch.** Drivers report problems as they come up, and dispatch sends back instructions like a detour or a schedule change. In an emergency, drivers use the radio to reach help quickly. - **One message to every bus.** Buses are typically on a shared channel, so dispatch can reach the whole fleet at once for something like a delayed start. - **Push-to-talk while driving.** Drivers press one button to talk and hear replies through a speaker, with no dialing and no screen.
