Loudtalks Lite now supports private channels

By Alexey Gavrilov on November 25, 2011

Public channels are fun but sometimes you want to have a channel just for your family, friends or classmates. Now you can — just set the channel password and share it within your group.

When creating a channel Loudtalks Lite allows you to specify the channel password. If you do so the others will have to provide the correct password to connect to your channel. If you already have a channel and want to add a password to it there is a new ‘Edit channel’ option in the channel context menu, which is only available to the channel admin and allows to set or change channel password and description.

The feature is available in the most recent release of Loudtalks Lite across platforms. Go and get the update now:

Loudtalks Lite for Android is published today!

By Alexey Gavrilov on July 25, 2011

I’m proud to announce the initial public beta release of Loudtalks Lite for Android. You can download it now from Android Market.

This release is a big improvement over the previous version distributed to a limited group of testers and I want to thank everyone who sent the feedback — we fixed tons of bugs with your help!

Version 1,1 available today has the same features as BlackBerry app, which we also updated today but the user interface was redesigned to work better with touch-based devices.

We are working to add the following features, currently missing from BB & Android releases:

  1. Voice history
  2. Public channels admin controls
  3. Private channels
Since this is the first public release we expect many bugs and frequent updates. Please help us by reporting them using Report a problem option in the app. Thanks!

Loudtalks Lite for BlackBerry is released

By Alexey Gavrilov on May 19, 2011

The long anticipated Loudtalks client for BlackBerry platform is available for download today. Please join the beta test and report any issues you face. To download the application visit http://loudtalks.com/bb/ on your BlackBerry.

The application allows you to talk to other BlackBerry users as well as to users of Windows desktop and Windows Mobile apps if they are using the new version of the client (at least 1.3).

This beta release (version 1.0.1) has the following limitations:

  1. No messages history
  2. Changing online status has no functional effect unlike Windows version where setting status to Away or Busy allows to receive the messages without playing them back right away
  3. Impossible to view the list of the users connected to a public channel

Please share any feedback you might have!

Loudtalks Cloud and Loudtalks Mesh clients for BlackBerry are expected within 2 weeks once the beta test of Loudtalks Lite is completed.

Loudtalks for BlackBerry status update

By Alexey Gavrilov on October 22, 2010

Update: It’s released! Download Loudtalks Lite for BlackBerry.

This is a quick update on the status of BlackBerry port of Loudtalks app. The initial plan was to release it in August however for various reasons it has been delayed and still not ready. However we didn’t abandon it and still motivated to release it as soon as possible.

Here is what to expect:

  1. The application will run on all BlackBerry devices running OS 4.5 and later (the oldest one supported is probably Curve 8100)
  2. The first version out will be Loudtalks Lite with Loudtalks Cloud client coming out later
  3. Initial release will not be inter-operable with current Loudtalks for Widows and Windows Mobile but we will provide interoperability in 1.0 release for all platforms coming next
  4. While working on the port we also seriously redesigned Loudtalks internal architecture to improve battery life and reduce data use

Public channels in Loudtalks Lite

By Alexey Gavrilov on April 19, 2010

The most recent update of Loudtalks Lite introduces new important feature — public talk channels. Public channels are open conversations between Loudtalks users, where as many as 100 people can participate at once. The concept is somewhat similar to Skypecasts, which were offered by Skype until discontinued in 2008.

Public channels are useful to:

  1. Meet the new people from around the world
  2. Discuss a topic with like minded strangers
  3. Share and receive updates on important time-sensitive information (traffic situation in your area, stocks market etc)
  4. Broadcast your status updates to interested followers (yes, like twitter)
  5. Learn a new language

Connecting to existing channels

1. Use menu Tools > Add a channel…

2. Enter channel name or the keywords (you can try ‘lobby’ or ‘support’) and press Next

3. It’ll show the list of the channels found. Click on the desired channel name to select it and click Next

4. After confirmation screen the channel will appear in your contacts.

5. To talk to the channel, select it in the contacts and use PTT key as usual. Please note that some channels may be “read-only”.

6. Use right-click on the channel name to Connect or Disconnect the channel or setup Auto-connect, when you log in.

7. If you want to delete the channel from your contacts you can use Tools > Delete selected contact(s) menu command.

When receiving a message from a channel both user name and channel name are displayed. In Loudtalks history you can use context menu on the incoming message to add the user who sent it to your contacts with one click. We are building the directory of the channels available to make the discovery easier.

Creating and managing your own channel

Have something interesting to share with the world? You can create one or more channels yourself!

1. Use Tools > Create a channel… menu command.

2. Name your channel, add description, select the channel type and click Next.

It’s very important to write a good and detailed description — the keywords it includes can be used by others to find your channel. Include the language of your channel, and its location (for location-sensitive information) into description. You can either allow anyone to talk on the channel or make it broadcast-only so you can talk uninterrupted. In the later case you may want to create another channel specifically for comments and mention it in the main channel description.

3. If the channel name is available, it’ll be created, added to your contacts and available for others to join.

4. The person who created the channel becomes channel administrator and have additional functions available in the context menu on incoming message in the history.

To fight abuse the channel admin can block any user from accessing the channel (or unblock the user previously blocked).

Hope you’ll enjoy the new feature! It’s still an early version of it so please share your suggestions and feedback — either in comments here or via ‘support’ channel in Loudtalks Lite.

Update (May 12, 2010): Now you can browse the public channels online.
